A familiar face and voice from the world of radio has visited Little Havens Children's Hospice to see how charity cash is helping life-limited youngsters live life to the full.
Heart DJ Toby Anstis popped along to meet families staying at Little Havens for respite breaks on 9th June. A few weeks ago, nearly £3,000 was donated to the hospice through Essex FM's Martin and Su's Essex Kids Charity to buy portable multi-sensory equipment. Now purchased, these specialist items will enable youngsters with disabilities to experience the benefits of this type of therapy, even if they are unable to access the hospice's special sensory room.
Caroline Grisley's son Billy is one of those children who will benefit from this gift. Billy, aged nine from Pitsea, has serious brain damage following a complex birth. This means he is visually impaired, has cerebral palsy and is totally immobile and dependent on other people. He has been visiting Little Havens since just after birth. Caroline, 46, says, 'Billy cannot talk so has to communicate with us in different ways. He responds extremely well to different types of sensory therapy such as touch and noise so this equipment will be invaluable during Billy's stays.'
Toby's visit is coinciding with the re-launch of Essex FM, which as from 22nd June will be known as Heart 96.3 & 102.6 and the charity, Have a Heart. Toby will be hosting the mid-morning show, following Heart Breakfast, still with Martin Day and Su Harrison. Toby says, 'The first thing that struck me about Little Havens is what a happy and positive place it is both for the children and their families. They've got wonderful state-of-the-art facilities to keep the kids entertained and stimulated - all in a beautiful and relaxed setting.
'It was great seeing the mobile sensory equipment we donated money for being used and enjoyed! Most of all, Little Havens is staffed by the most amazing, kind and inspirational people I've ever met. I'd like to thank everyone for making me feel so welcome and I am genuinely looking forward to going back and seeing everyone again soon.'
Little Havens Children's Hospice provides respite breaks, symptom control and end-of-life care for youngsters living with serious conditions and who are not expected to reach adulthood. It aims to make their journey - and that of the family - as comfortable as possible, creating special memories along the way.
